HRT is synonymous with powerboat racing in New Zealand with the H in HRT standing for the Hughes family name. The racing part of the team consist of father Steven, who has a 35 year history in racing in New Zealand and son Sam who, with that sort of family history to live up to, drives an F2 boat rightfully called the apprentice.
During the season the Hughes family will bring us up to speed with what powerboat racing in New Zealand is all about. Father Steven currently drives a Seebold NZ F1 series and son Sam pilots a Burgess hull through New Zealand F2 series. Both have done well in all the racing they did with Sam already securing an F2 New Zealand National title and Steven having been a champion in the classes he raced for several times and being the 2009 F1 New Zealand Champion still. Steven has accomplished this feat being the oldest driver of the pack. He has also been driver of the year for three times and to date holds the NZ speed record for outboard boats.
As the season in New Zealand is done now (May 1st) HRT will keep us up to date on their preparations for the next season and will give us their point of view on the rest of the racing we report on here on PowerboatPro.
