CELTIC CUP VENUES COULD DECIDE ZAPCAT CHAMPIONSHIP
Defending Zapcat National Champions Craig Davis (22) pilot of Bluesheets Racing 1 and co-pilot Rob Martin (23) will be looking to hang onto their lead over the next three Zapcat Grand Prix weekends in Prestatyn, Barry Island and Aberdeen.
The Welsh and Scottish venues from mid July to the end of August form the remaining rounds of the Celtic Cup and a third of the championship season so plenty of points available.
This is their 6th season of racing and their form over the last 18 months has been one of total domination winning almost every GP up until the last event in Edinburgh where they tied on points but lost to BladeRun on a count back of heat wins!
“For those of you who have never heard of Zapcats they are inflatable catamarans powered by a 50HP Tohatsu engine capable of racing in breaking surf or pulling up to 2-3G and almost 50mph on flat water in a high speed turn, the largest one-design powerboat class in the world and originate from Southern Hemisphere surf rescue boats, raced by men and women on an equal basis across the UK” said Martin Jupp, Events Director and former Zapcat racer.
“Zapcat Racing is free to watch at all race venues or online and is great entertainment particularly on a tight technical course or in the surf as plenty of thrills, spills and flips are guaranteed, fortunately with the use of propeller guards and highly skilled safety team and race officials major damage to boats or racers is vary rare. Zapcat Racing is one of the very few truly affordable motorsports and we have family teams who have raced for the last 8 seasons who are testament to that.”
Eight Zapcat GP events make up the season with 16 rounds counting towards the majority of championship titles, each round consists of 16 heats and two divisonal finals and each team will race in five heats aiming to qualify for their respective final.
“A brand new race boat including engine costs just under £10k and there are always reasonable second-hand race boats available for around half of that or less, entry into the championships for the season is from £1000 per team and covers all GP races, it is not too late to enter a couple of race weekends this season as there are five GP events remaining including the closing GP back in Newquay in the surf in September.”
Martin added “We are already looking at venues for 2011 and have secured the first two; we expect to see more teams join the five Rookies of this year and the fleet back up to 25 to 30 teams at each venue in 2011. A reduction in sponsorship has affected all motorsports this year and several high profile events and race series have been postponed or cancelled including the so called more glamorous powerboat classes which have been very badly hit, we have been more fortunate, that we worked very hard to provide a full race calendar but as a result have had to travel further afield than we would have liked and this has obviously been at a cost to us as organisers and to the teams as a whole”.
For brands and companies looking to associate themselves with this 10 year old championship or coastal resorts in the UK looking for a summer 2011 attraction, the organisers will be particularly keen to hear from you.
