POWERBOAT P1 USA VISITS LAKE CUMBERLAND

Lake Cumberland is an unusual site-a quiet, yet large lake in the middle of Kentucky-known for its horse farms, not necessarily horsepower!  A few hours ride from Lexington, Louisville, or Cincinnati, the lake becomes a bustling haven for powerboaters when a race or Poker Run rolls into town!  As OSS stopped here for the second race on its circuit, true to form, the pits were alive with engines roaring and competition brewing.

The weather was questionable just before the start of the final race of the weekend, as a morning storm threateningly moved through the area.  But, the sun broke through and lit up the course for the Super Vee Lite race.  The fleet would do 14 laps on a challenging course that included tight turns under the bridge.

The best battle of the day was the fight between Pirate Racing and Team Octane as they swapped the lead over the last 4 laps of the race, with both teams playing cat and mouse in the turns.  On the final lap, Pirate got by Octane on the outside of turn 3, and held onto the lead through the remainder of the course to take the third place position on the podium.

“It was the best race we have ever been in.  The back and forth race with Lance and Shelly was incredible.  We are looking forward to doing it again in the rougher waters of Sunny Isles!” exclaimed David Dehnam of Pirate Racing.

Watch Your Back, the new Fountain that everyone was watching,  won with a 35 second lead, opening a 2 second per lap margin over Typhoon that lacked about a half mph over the Fountain in the flat conditions of Lake Cumberland.

The real disappointment came when after working all day on Saturday, with the help of other teams in the class, Scream’n Nuts/TOURSEKY.COM got their boat running and made it to the course, only to have a power steering line break as the green flag went up, making them a DNS even after the monumental repair effort.

The final results were:

 1    Watch Your Back

2    Typhoon

3    Pirate Racing

4    Octane

5    Scream’n Nuts – TourSEKY.com    DNS

The Super Vee Lite teams indicate that they are looking forward to continuing the momentum that they have as a group.  They will head to the Sunny Isles, Florida OPA event June 11-13, and be ready for the next OSS/SBI race in Sarasota, FL over the July 4th weekend.
