UIM F2 World Championship – Hungary 12th & 13th June 2010

17 drivers from 12 nations ready to commence battle in Dunaujvaros !

The Opening round of the UIM F2 World Championship in Dunaujvaros, Hungary is fast approaching with teams from all over Europe and as far as Kuwait already arriving at the venue.

After an absence of nearly 8 years the F2 World Championship returns to the beautiful city of Dunaujvaros where the best F2 drivers in the world will battle it out in the hope of having a successful start to their 2010 season.

Among this year’s contenders, current F2 World Champion Johan Coenradi from the Netherlands will be going all out this year to retain his title with a brand new DAC hull which has proven very quick in testing.  Fast on Johan’s heels will be Uvis Slakteris from Latvia, fresh from his victory in the recent Scandinavian race in Denmark and previous 3 times world champion Colin Jelf from the UK who will also be looking to take back the title in 2010. All three drivers finished within 3 points of each other last year – a very close result.

Also back in the mix is Yousef Al Rubayan and the Port Ghalib team from Kuwait. Yousef has been testing very hard all winter and is ready to repeat last season’s success when he was crowned the F2 Continental Champion in Fujairah. Ivan Brigada from Italy is also back in 2010 after an awesome performance in 2009 when he returned to F2. Joining him will be fellow Italian Paolo Zantelli who makes a welcome return to F2 after a long absence.

Swedish Drivers Erik Stark & Johan Osterberg will also be returning in 2010 after they were both involved in a huge accident in Fujairah 2009. Both Drivers are fit and well and judging by the impressive performances in 2009 could prove to be major contenders for the F2 title.

Local Hungarian drive Laszlo Kovacs is hoping for glory on his home water after he was plagued with bad luck in the 2009 season and will be joined by veteran driver Bela Cserni who is also making a welcome return to F2. They will surely be ones to watch in Dunuajvaros.

UK driver Owen Jelf will also be looking towards taking the F2 Title after testing hard for the last few months, along with Bartek Marszelak from Poland who finally got to grips with his new BABA hull at the end of 2009 and could prove a huge threat as a contender for the championship.

Another new face in F2 this year will be Rupp Temper from Austria. Rupp is a former F3 Veteran and will be looking to bring his skills to F2 and have a competitive season. Nick Bisterfeld from Team Germany will also be making a return in 2010 and it is hoped that this young and talented German driver can make his mark in F2 this year.

Beranger Robart from France also returns to F2 in 2010 after a fairly successful rookie year in 2009, he will be joined by fellow countryman Philippe Tourre who always proves to be one to watch out for with years of experience.

The ‘Fast Fin’ Mikki Forrs will also be making a return to the F2 World Championship in 2010 and after competing in the Scandinavian Championship and winning the F2 European Championship he will be eager to make his presence felt in Dunaujvaros.

The Hungarian National Authority looks forward to welcoming the F2 Teams and drivers and hopes that everyone has a safe and successful race. Many hours have work have been completed to make the event run as smooth as possible.

With so many different nationalities, old and new drivers, new boats and new attitude it’s impossible to predict the results from this eagerly anticipated race – the F2 World Championship for now is wide open and we just have to wait and see what happens when the chequered flag is waived!

Good Luck to all of the drivers and teams – Let the race Begin !!!

About Dunaujvaros :

This pretty industrial town has developed greatly since the end of World War Two. The industrial life of the town is centered on the huge Danube Iron and Steel Works which was started in 1950. In addition to the steelworks there are paper mills and textile factories and the town is a busy river port.

Although this largely industrial town has few historical buildings which remain, during redevelopment a number of Bronze Age settlements and the remains of a Roman frontier town, Intercisa, were unearthed. The finds are now on display in the Dunaujvaros museum.

An unusual feature of the town is that the central heating for many buildings is provided by the surplus hot water produced at the iron and steel works. A belt of Canadian and Swedish pine trees divide the steelworks from the town. There is a pioneer railway, an amusement park, an open-air theatre and a number of sports grounds.

Wheat, maize, barley and sugar beet are grown in the surrounding countryside and the cultivation of rice had started in recent years.
