WELMAX LINING-UP TWO-BOAT ASSAULT FOR NORWAY
Monday, 20 June: Welmax Offshore Racing has announced that it will run two boats in next month’s BMW Norwegian Grand Prix in Arendal (15-17 July).
Team owner and throttleman, Jorn Tandberg, confirmed that the number two boat is the Maritimo-designed and built hull that the team ran as Welmax Alianza in Brazil in last year, in which Norway’s Marit Stromoy made her Class 1 debut. He then leased the boat to Norwegian rivals Zabo Racing.
The boat will be powered by Mercury V8 power-plants and will run under the colours of ferskfisken.no “Time is short and there is a lot to do but the team is working night and day to be ready for our home race,” said an optimistic Tandberg. “We have made considerable changes to both boats, but I am not saying more at this time and will announce the driver line-up in the coming weeks.”
Whilst Tandberg is remaining tight-lipped about modifications to both boats and who will take the wheel and the sticks in the number two boat, it is expected that he will race alongside countryman Kolbjorn Selmer in the Mercury-powered, MTI-designed Welmax.
The all-Norwegian partnership has enjoyed considerable success since teaming-up in Arendal in 2009, taking ten podium finishes from 21-starts and five wins in pole position last year to lift the Edox Pole Position Championship.
Tandberg also has a habit of winning in Arendal; he took his first win in 2007 alongside Christian Zaborowski, repeating the feat the following year with Inge Brigt Aarbakke, the pair going on to win in Romania and lift the European title.
