ZAPCAT RACING READY TO DESCEND ON ABERDEEN THIS WEEKEND

Excitement is building in the lead up to Zapcat Racing’s Aberdeen debut this weekend.

Amid the waves off Aberdeen Beach, racers and their boats will compete for points towards the National, Team, Mixed, Rookie, City and Celtic Cup categories. Crowds will be able to witness first-hand the exhillarating action that has come to be expected with the coastal racing of these one design catamaran powerboats.

Event partners Aberdeen City Council are confident that adrenaline junkies and seaside visitors alike will embrace the spectacle.

“It is wonderful that the Zapcat Championship is coming to Aberdeen,” comments Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Peter Stephen. “This is a beautiful part of Scotland and our seafront is perfect for this type of exciting event.

“This is a first for the city and I am quite sure that it will attract people from far and wide into Aberdeen. People of all ages will enjoy the spectacle of these high-powered craft competing against each other.”

Not only one of the most exciting championships in the UK, Zapcat Racing is the most accessible of almost any motorsport with packages available for under £10,000.

“We’re heading further north than any UK Zapcat Championship event has gone before,” explains Martin Jupp, Event Director, Zapcat Racing. “The people of Aberdeen have already been tremendously accommodating and I hope they will turn out in numbers for the event itself.

“2010 has been one of – if not the – best years for us to date and we want to be bigger and better still in 2011. Potential competitors will get the chance to see the racing in all its glory at Aberdeen Beach.”

Local interest at the free-to-view event will come via SeaVacation I (Luke Wills, Rich Howe) and II (Jack Weller, Nick Martin) – boat numbers 21 and 69 respectively – as both teams race under the colours of Scotland, sponsored by former racer and Aberdeenshire resident Sharon Kearsey.

Championship leaders, Blue Sheets Racing will be fighting tooth and nail to defend their position and keep their almost flawless race record.

With the championship renowned as a highly entertaining race series, as well as one that respects and protects the areas it visits, the number of Zapcats in action is set to be fewer than at previous Grand Prix’s following advice from local authorities, coastguard and conservation specialists.

The weekend action starts at 12noon on each day.  If you’re not near Aberdeen, you can watch the racing live at www.zapcat-racing.com or here on PowerboatPro
